MARCEL RODRIGUEZ LOPEZ

sightsoundrhythm:

Marcel Rodriguez Lopez is a Grammy Award winning multi-instrumentalist best known for his percussion and keyboard playing with the progressive rock group The Mars Volta, though this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as his musical accomplishments are concerned.

He is also the drummer and recording engineer for the group Zechs Marquisewhich features two of his brothers, Marfred and Riko, as well as Marcos Smith and Matt Wilkson. Their most recent album entitled Getting Paid is out now on Sargent House/RLP. In addition to this Marcel records electronic music under the name Eureka the Butcher and has played on around eighteen releases by his brother Omar Rodriguez Lopez since 2006. The dude is prolific.

SIGHT/SOUND/RHYTHM caught up with Marcel before a Zechs Marquise show in Leeds, UK to talk about musical development, studio recording and technology within his music.

The Shades-Artifacts

If you’re looking for something original and fresh sounding, look no further than the new album from Florida’s The Shades. Titled Artifacts, this 5 track EP from Danny Osgood (percussion) and Truman Lusson (vox and production) is nothing short of groovy. The riffs and lyrics off of Crooked Shadows and Shake Those Petals Off Ya are sure to stick around in your head for a while. The Shades are without MC KBO on this album but in no way does that put a burden on their music. There are hints of hip-hop, electronic, blues, and classic rock that work together and give this EP an amazing modern overtone. Truman Lusson’s lyrics fit perfectly in with the mellow, groovy flow of this EP. The artwork and music on this album is original and truly a breath of fresh air. Its hard not to appreciate something so short and sweet such as this EP.

It's Ok to get Mega Slapped by Zechs Marquise

Zechs Marquise…a band who I had to discover because of a man named Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (The Mars Volta, At The Drive-In). Omar, being one of my favorite artists of all time, happens to have three younger brothers. His three younger brothers are in a band called Zechs Marquise and last year they have created one of my favorite albums of all time, Getting Paid. I am not just saying that it is one of my favorite albums of all time because I’m going through a phase or something, but because I have never heard anything like it before. I get excited every time I listen to it. These dudes are more than an inspiration to me. Matt Wilkinson, Marcos Smith, Marcel, Marfred, and Riko Rodriguez-Lopez have made music from the future that was recorded on a distant planet somewhere in outer space. Or just somewhere in El Paso, TX…

I have a pretty funny story regarding this band. Earlier this year I went out to SXSW in Austin,TX. I sort of followed Zechs Marquise around a little bit. The first show they played was a house party with a bunch of other bands playing one after the other. The whole time the owner of the house continued to warn everybody that the cops may come because it was against city ordinances to have more than 50 people on your property at any given time. So if the police were to show up he would therefore issue a “code red” type deal and have half the party go to the adjacent lot. The whole day goes by with no problems. Zechs Marquise went on at about 7-7:30pm. As soon as they got done playing their first song, I looked at my buddy next to me and said, “Get ready for the code red”. Zechs is a band, that when they play their instruments they mean business. They are loud, groovy, progressive, and just utterly powerful. To me they had the clearest sound and were one of the more talented bands there. Sure enough the “code red” happens and thankfully half the party moved over and the cops were understanding. Zechs finished their set, straight up killed it as usual and blew everyone’s minds out of the water. Thanks fellas!

First Listen to Fang Island's Major

Fang Island's new album, Major, comes out July 24.

(left to right: Jason Bartell, Chris Georges, Marc St. Sauveur)

And my album of the year so far goes to Fang Island’s Major (out July 24th on Sargent House). Whenever I discover new music I try to share it with as much people as possible. The music of Fang Island is untouchable in the sense that no one these days create guitar riffs that make you want to dance and high five the shit out of everybody in the room. Major is the follow up to their self titled debut Fang Island both out on Sargent House. Progressive, melodic, uplifting are some of the words I use to describe my first listen to this powerful album. If you are looking for strong riffs with catchy, unconventional melodic vocals this album is for you. Any band who’s music I don’t get sick of holds a special place in my heart. You can tell that with bands like these the music just comes from dedicated hard work and passion for making music. It is a piece of their soul. So please check em out! You won’t be disappointed.

MY FRIENDS PT.2

So being a music lover, I am always interested in what other people’s favorite albums of all time are. Something I have recently started doing is asking my friends what albums they absolutely can not live without. Here are their responses:

Talia Martirano (fellow music lover from New York)

  • “I And Love And You” by The Avett Brothers

Talia’s Response:I love them because they are such a unique combination of rock & country music. I am not a country music fan at heart but I love all of their songs, they are amazing writers and musicians.”

  • “Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV: Vol.1, From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness” by Coheed and Cambria

Talia’s response: “ I’ve never felt someone’s emotions so much through songs. That is saying a lot, especially when the songs are all about a science fiction story. Claudio Sanchez is a true songwriter, being able to take a fictional, magical story and make it so easy for people to feel and relate to (<3333 Coheed lovefest). Honestly I love every song on that album!”

James Byrd (Musician/Long time friend)

  • “Niadra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt” by John Frusciante

James’ Response:“I chose this Frusciante album for the number of emotions it can make me feel all at once. I can listen to it and feel so much at any given time during the album. Embracing the changing of feelings is what I love so much about what this album does for me.”

  • “Trout Mask Replica”by Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band

Quite the taxing listen. If you are the type who desires to open your mind and challenge yourself, have a go at it. If you are not, then please disregard this post. Released in 1969, Captain Beefheart was either a million years before his time or a million years ahead of his time. I’m still trying to figure it out. I love this album for so many reasons. It scares the hell out of me, it makes me laugh, it makes me wonder. I recently read an article where someone said, “If there is ever an alien invasion, Send Trout Mask Replica into outer space and the aliens will get scared and retreat.” Just see for yourself my friends and you may (but probably won’t) understand. RIP Don Van Vliet, your spirit lives on!

James’ Response: “listening to trout mask is like having a mad scientist tweak on your brain in an effort to show you the light.”

Keith Saunders (My friend with some of the utmost powerful musical taste), Mike Scala (Older brother), Tyler Allen (ICM Los Angeles)

  • “The Artist In The Ambulance” by Thrice

It really was cool to see that these three all picked the same album. Being that these guys are all the same age group, it was interesting to see the similarity of their opinion. I can just picture it…Thrice playing Warped Tour, as the 3 guys I listed above are thrashing out in the Summer heat without a care in the world. This band was really a staple for a new age of alternative rock. I just saw them on their farewell tour about a month ago on May 16th,2012 in Orlando. It was surreal just knowing that a group that shaped so many kids musical endeavors will be on a hiatus and entering a new chapter of their lives. Thanks goes out to the guys of Thrice, your music will live forever!

Juan Alderete...Legendary Bass Player and Pedalboard Wizard

Check out the bass wizard, Juan Alderete’s (The Mars Volta, Big Sir, Racer X, Vato Negro) new website. He discusses arrangements of pedals and effects that he uses to obtain various tones and sounds for the music he plays. The website launched on June 4th, 2012 and I already learned a hell of a lot with just a few clicks. Looking forward for more to come. Thanks Juan! The site is rad, I never knew how informative you are.

My Friends pt.1

So being a music lover, I am always interested in what other people’s favorite albums of all time are. Something I have recently started doing is asking my friends what albums they absolutely can not live without. Here are their responses:

Daniel Gouts (multi-instrumentalist/friend)

  • “Shadows Collide With People” by John Frusciante

Daniel’s response: “Shadows collide with people is such a diverse album with so many different feelings. After listening to it from beginning to end I feel as though I lived an entire life. Thanks John Frusciante”.

  • “Deloused in the Comatorium” by The Mars Volta

Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez defined a new style of progressive rock with this record. Each of their following records pushed music to a new limit, but this one broke the ground and re-surfaced it, changing rock forever.

Daniel’s response: “De-Loused in the Comatorium is one of those albums where every time I listen to it, I hear something new”. Couldn’t agree with you more on this one buddy!

*********************************************************************************

Andrew Larson (folk music aficionado/long time friend)

  • “Blood On The Tracks” by Bob Dylan

Andrew’s response: “Whenever I’m down, the strain in Dylan’s voice let’s me know other people have felt the same. Everyone goes through struggles and overcoming them is what makes us human”.

Tyler Allen (Agent at International Creative Management/Friend)

  • “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3” by Coheed & Cambria
  • “On Letting Go” by Circa Survive

“In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3” is definitely in my top 3 of all time. Coheed and Cambria’s music means so much to me. It helped me grow up and get through a lot of problems in my life. I owe this band endless gratitude.

Tyler’s response: “These albums are follow up albums for perhaps 2 of the greatest debut albums in the history of modern post-progressiverock. They solidified their place because it is ridiculously hard to make a second album as good as, or better than, the first. Especially when both bands debut albums are so successful and groundbreaking”.
